Various Family Services & Therapy
A common service is family therapy to complement other treatment services provided to a family or individuals in a family. If an individual is in therapy and family therapy is needed, often a separate family therapist can be more effective. In this case, the family therapist would work with other treatment providers to ensure the most effective treatment approaches on all levels. Generally the goal is to ensure everyone fully understands each other’s points of view and learn new strategies to interact with each other. This can improve the relationships with family members and reduce the stress within the family system overtime. Length of this services can vary pending severity of presenting problems, family goals, and progress of the family system.
Education on diagnoses
Family members often want to learn about treatments recommended to them. A few meetings can help a family understand a diagnoses and navigate the treatment world. Many benefit from understanding why a certain model is recommended or why a diagnosis was given.
Parent Consultation / Therapy
Another family service can include parent consultation/therapy to assist parents in more effective ways to approach their child/children when communicating, to support and manage their own emotions as well as those they are caring for, and to strategize more effective disciplinary approaches for behavior change.
Parent consultation can include parent coaching. Pending parent’s/parents’ struggles, this may be extra helpful between sessions to strategize approaches to situations in the moment. This is similar to DBT coaching found in DBT individual therapy. Pending the difficulties at home, this can boost parent’s/parents’ confidence, and feel they aren’t alone in their difficulties. This can improve the relationships between caregivers and those they take care of and reduce the stress within the family system overtime. Length of this services can vary pending presenting problems, progress in consultation/therapy, and goals.
Family Skills Training
Family skills training is associated with DBT. This service provides an individual family with skills in place of a family attending skills training. Research for adolescents and families is based on multifamily groups, which is often unavailable in the local area. This alternative can help a family learn together in place of adolescents and parents learning separately. Family skills training is best when provided from a therapist separate from individual therapy to any family member. This is a skills package that typically lasts for 6-9 months pending spacing and frequency of appointments as well as progress of learning by the family.
Individual Family Support / Therapy
Many supportive caregivers or partners seek treatment to help build skills to be more effective to help their loved ones. This often is a more consultative approach and yet caregivers and partners often can benefit from therapy as much as their loved ones. Sometimes they may seek therapy when their loved one doesn’t. Often consultation for a family member transitions into individual therapy. Caregivers and partners can develop diagnoses like depression, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of interactions and difficulties with their loved ones over time. Chronic stress can build into psychological issues like previously mentioned, medical difficulties often exacerbated or as a result of stress. As stress builds effectiveness or interactions can lessen deteriorating the relationship(s). Individual therapy can assist caregivers and partners develop more effective strategies when interacting with others including their loved ones and add personal coping skills to reduce associated stress. Length of service may vary based on need.
